Points To Consider …
Everyone has their own perspective on transportation issues, of course. When discussing Personal Rapid Transit it seems most reasonable to make sure the person you are conversing with understands precisely what PRT is and does. There is often confusion with other modes of transport that needs to be clarified.
Next, it seems most respectful to ask the person what questions he or she has about PRT. Be honest if you cannot answer a question and direct him or her to an authoritative source. Be forthcoming about any drawbacks that might occur with PRT, although you might want to compare it with other modes because it is still probably preferable.
Electric vehicles are a “hot” topic these days and can lead to a discussion of PRT and its benefits.
Surprisingly, the subject of transportation can inspire heated emotions. Some people are in love with the streetcars of a bygone era, for example. Resist any temptation to lecture or harangue. We will have to let the evidence speak for itself.
CPRT has regular discussions with citizens, private groups, and agencies about the issues regarding transit, transportation, and mobility. Conversations tend to raise the hairs on people’s necks, so it is important, as we look into alternative mass transit approaches for our cities, that we keep civil levels of respect for each other’s viewpoints. Spend most your time listening, and when presenting your views do it in a way that is not insulting and instead has a tone of inquiry and informing. Please be respectful of others views and free yourself from contentiousness that comes with bias, which we all have.
